Quesions and Answers
Who has acupuncture?
A wide range of people come for acupuncture treatment. There is no typical patient. Many people use acupuncture as a first choice, whilst others find it beneficial where other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful. As well as seeking help for a wide variety of physical problems many people come with stress related disorders. Patients often report feeling more able to cope with stress in their lives as treatment progresses and their overall health improves.
What happens during the initial treament?
The initial session takes up to 1.5 hours and is an essential part of treatment. Details of the main symptoms will be discussed at length together with medical and family history, lifestyle and various system functions such as sleep, digestion, energy etc. Your pulse will be taken on both wrists and I will look at your tongue and may palpate your abdomen to gather information for your treatment.
To obtain maximum benefit from your treatment it is best to avoid alcohol on the day of treatment. Eat lightly within a couple of hours before treatment so you aren’t very hungry but not too full to lie down comfortably. It is beneficial to allow some time to take things easy after treatment and avoid anything excessive i.e vigorous exercise or really hot bath's.
How will I respond to treatment?
Responses to treatment are very individual. While some people respond very quickly , others may need treatment for a longer period of time. Treatment expectations will be discussed with you when you come for your initial visit.

Does it hurt?
We use very thin disposable stainless steel needles . Sensations often experienced are tingling or a heavy feeling and generally, feelings of pleasant relaxation. The sensation is very different to an injection or having blood taken.

Other treatment methods may also be used where appropriate including:-
Moxibustion - the application of a smouldering herb over an acupuncture point to help facilitate healing .
Cupping - is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin to create suction. Cupping can help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being.
Electro acupuncture - A very mild micro current travels through acupuncture needles in the treatment of pain and inflammation.
Auricular therapy - Treating points in the ear. The ear is a microsystem and reflects the whole body. Needles and /or seeds in the form of tourmeline stones and silver or gold pellets on plaster or micropore tape may be utilised on the ear to support acupuncture treatments and extend the benefits.
